How to Apply

Thank you for your interest in our residency program. We begin interviews in mid-October. Completed applications must be received by Nov. 5, 2007 to be considered for the 2008 Match.

Here are the steps you need to follow to apply:

  1. Register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for an R1 position.
  2. Complete your application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All applications to our residency program must come through ERAS.
  3. A complete application consists of the ERAS Common Application Form (CAF), medical school transcript, personal statement, USMLE scores (Part 1), Dean's letter and four letters of recommendation.
  4. USMLE Step 1 must be taken prior to application and Step 2 must be taken before the match with no fails.
  5. Graduation from medical school within 2 years of the expected start of the R1 year (2007-2008), OR since graduation, participation in a US accredited residency or fellowship program, or other post-graduate education.
  6. If applicable, ECFMG certification. Please note that our program sponsors the J-1 visa only.

Following our application deadline in November, we will email notices regarding interviews. Interview dates are listed below.

Consider an Early Interview

October is a wonderful time to visit Seattle. The summer crowds have gone, but the summer weather still lingers. We conduct interviews beginning in October to allow us to keep each interview day small and personal.

Although your file will not be complete at the time of an October interview, please be assured we consider all new information provided to us prior to our selection committee meeting in February 2008.

If you are interested in being considered for an October or November interview, we will need to have received your CAF, Personal Statement, a copy of your medical school transcript, and at least one letter of recommendation.

Once you have submitted these through ERAS, please contact us directly to let us know you are interested in an early interview and we will review your file.

Physician-Scientist Interview Days

We have two interview opportunities more specifically geared toward physician-scientists: October 24-25 and November 14-15.

On these dates, applicants interested in a career that involves basic science or translational research will spend Wednesday at Children’s Hospital interviewing and Thursday morning meeting with UW physician-scientist faculty and fellows at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the University of Washington and our research facility at 307 Westlake.

Please contact us if you are interested in this opportunity to explore the exciting research taking place at Children’s Hospital and the University of Washington.

Spend an Extra Day in Seattle

Your interview day takes place at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center. If you have interest in visiting Harborview Medical Center, a continuity clinic site, the University of Washington, or spending time on rounds with the residents, please consider spending an additional day in Seattle. We will be happy to work with you to individualize the experience.

Our residents often have social events scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at local restaurants or brewpubs during applicant season. This is an opportunity to meet residents outside the hospital in an informal setting and enjoy some of the sights and sounds of Seattle. Details of social events will be sent to you once your interview date is scheduled.
