Each August, a week-long camp for children with chronic disease is held at the base of Mt. Rainier.
This camp is sponsored by Dr. Stanley Stamm, a Children’s cardiologist. Residents are invited, and encouraged, to attend as camp counselors and volunteers.
Each year there are many opportunities for social interactions between residents, their families and the faculty. These events are all planned and organized by the chief residents.
Some of the most popular activities include the Resident/Faculty Softball Game, the Winter Party, Graduation Grand Rounds, an End of the Year Banquet, and Burgers on the Chiefs (BOTC) where residents and their families are invited to dinner with the chief residents at restaurants throughout Seattle.
These events are a great time to socialize, laugh, and relax.
The Intramural Activities and Athletic facility (IMA) at the University of Washington provides tennis courts, a large indoor swimming pool and extensive workout facilities.
Residents can have access to the facilities at the IMA for a small quarterly fee. Residents also have the opportunity to receive a discounted membership at Pro-Robics, a great local gym located within walking distance of Children’s Hospital. In addition, resident exercise equipment is located in the hospital, near the house staff lounge.
Each Thursday, first year residents meet together for one hour of protected time with an experienced facilitator. The support group is a great opportunity to meet with fellow R1s and to share the ups and downs of resident life.
Residency can be a busy time for a resident and his/her family. The following support programs are available to residents and their families through Children’s:
Children’s Hospital faculty and community physicians donate funds for purchasing theater and symphony tickets, providing each resident with at least two free tickets each year.
In addition, residents are frequently offered free last-minute tickets to plays, concerts and sporting events.
Children’s Hospital provides discounted tickets to Seattle Mariners, Seahawks, Sonics and Storm games to residents, faculty and employees.
