Three funded sub-internship positions in general pediatrics will be available at Children’s Hospital in Seattle from August through November of 2008 for qualified applicants from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine.
The sub-internship program is designed to give students a chance to experience the exceptional training that the University of Washington (UW) has to offer. In addition, it gives the residents and attendings at Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center (CHRMC), the primary training site for the UW Pediatric Residency, a chance to form a close working relationship with each student. Qualified applicants will be invited to interview for residency in pediatrics at the UW during their rotation in Seattle.
Sub-interns will spend four weeks on one of the three ward teams at CHRMC. As Children’s is a tertiary care center, students will care for a variety of patients, from bread and butter pediatrics to medically complex patients. Sub-interns will take call with an intern and senior every fourth night, and pick up at least 2 patients each call night. Students will also be expected to attend morning report and noon conference daily, as well as weekly grand rounds.
Applications will be reviewed by members of the Residency Diversity Committee (RDC). The application deadline is June 15, 2008. Applicants not selected for the funded RDC sub-internship will, if interested, be entered into the general pool of applicants for unfunded sub-internships at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
