Physician Scientist Experiences

Our pediatric faculty at Children’s Hospital and the UW are also affiliated with Harborview Medical Center, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the School of Public Health, and the Child Health Institute.

Residents have the opportunity to work with top research faculty in basic sciences, translational research, clinical research, or health services and epidemiology.

Some residents choose a research elective because they are certain of their career path and want to continue research begun as a medical student or graduate student.

Other residents choose to do a research elective because they are unsure of their career path and are interested in experiencing research and possibly identifying research paths for future fellowship training.

Some examples of recent research projects conducted by residents include:

  • A study of pediatric wilderness recreational deaths in Western Washington State
  • A systematic review of television exposure in young children
  • Basic science research on virulence mechanisms for Group B streptococcus
  • Cardiology research examining the use of cardiac catherterization and angioplasty in children with shunt failure
  • A systematic review of non-surgical therapies for GERD

Many residents choose to continue their research after their month-long elective is complete, frequently leading to additional research or projects with their faculty advisor. Residents who choose to do research often present their findings at national conferences.

Our program does support alternative training options for highly qualified physician-sceintists. If you have questions about pursuing the Special Alternative Pathway through the American Board of Pediatrics (short-tracking) or other research opportunities including the Integrated or Accelerated Research Pathways, please contact our program and we will be happy to speak with you about your individual interests and needs.
