Post-Residency Opportunities

Throughout residency training, residents are given multiple opportunities to explore both long and short-term career goals.

Residents have regular meetings with their assigned advisor, as well as meetings with the Chairman and Residency Directors, for this purpose.

Specific time is also set aside during the R2 and R3 Retreats to discuss career planning for primary care, subspecialty fellowships, academic medicine, and international health opportunities.

The eventual career decisions of our residents reflect the remarkable diversity of opportunities available through the UW Pediatric Residency Training Program and the Pacific Northwest.

Over the past 20 years, 51 percent of our graduates have gone on to private practice in primary care pediatrics and 49 percent have completed additional subspecialty training within pediatrics.

Residents who choose fellowships consistently match at the top of their lists and nearly 75 percent are currently practicing within an academic setting. Subspecialty training in virtually every academic discipline is available at Children’s Hospital and the University of Washington.

While many of our graduates in primary care pediatrics choose to work in the urban areas of Western Washington and Oregon, approximately 30 percent currently practice in more rural or medically underserved areas.

In recent years, a significant number of graduates have chosen to work for the Indian Health Service with practice sites throughout Arizona and New Mexico, as well as placements in rural locations throughout the United States through the National Health Service Corps.

Many individuals with prior research experience who are planning an academic career have utilized the ABP's Special Alternative Pathway to complete residency and post-residency fellowship training in five rather than six years.
